In April, daytime temperatures in Calpe are usually around 20–22°C, and in the sunshine it feels even warmer.

It was perfect for beach time, long walks, and hiking, with mild evenings to gently wind down. And the best part? No big crowds — just space to relax and slow down.

How to Get to Calpe

Calpe is located on Spain’s Costa Blanca, in the province of Alicante, and it’s surprisingly easy to reach.

The closest airport is Alicante–Elche Airport, which is about 1 hour by car from Calpe. Renting a car is the most convenient option, especially if you’d like the freedom to explore nearby coastal towns and hidden beaches.

Another option is flying into Valencia Airport, which is approximately 1 hour and 30–40 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

The drive from Valencia is truly scenic, making it a relaxed and comfortable start to your best beach vacation.

My tip: on the way, stop at some hidden gems like the beautiful beaches of Granadella or Cala Moraig, or take a detour to visit the scenic Castell de Xàtiva.

Public transport is also possible. You can take a train or tram from Alicante or Benidorm and then continue by taxi to Calpe. However, if you prefer flexibility and ease, having a car makes everything simpler.

10 Best Things Not to Miss in Calpe

Calpe is truly one of the coziest and most diverse towns on the Costa Blanca. 

If you’re looking for a destination that combines relaxation with light adventure, Calpe might just be your next best beach vacation.

Below you’ll find our personal recommendations of the things we truly enjoyed and believe you shouldn’t miss during your stay.

1. Relax at Playa de la Fossa

Playa de la Fossa is a long sandy beach with clear, calm water and a beautiful promenade.

It’s perfect for slow morning walks or simply lying in the sun. There are many restaurants nearby where you can enjoy good Mediterranean food with a sea view.

2. Spend Time at Arenal-Bol Beach

Arenal-Bol is wide, central, and ideal for swimming or watching the sunset.

When we visited in April, it felt calm and spacious. It also feels very safe and pleasant for families with children, and there are plenty of lovely cafés and restaurants nearby.

3. Hike the Iconic Peñón de Ifach

The Peñón de Ifach is the symbol of Calpe and one of its absolute highlights.

The hike starts gently, then passes through a small tunnel, and later becomes steeper and more adventurous. The final section is rocky and can be slippery, so good shoes and balance are important. It’s manageable for older children, but not ideal for very small kids.

Important tip: book your hiking ticket in advance, especially in high season, as entry is limited.

The panoramic views over Costa Blanca from above are absolutely worth the effort. We didn’t make it all the way to the top this time — but it’s definitely on our list for our next visit.

6. Visit Las Salinas

Las Salinas de Calpe is a peaceful salt lagoon located right next to the Peñón de Ifach.

The flat walking path around the water makes it perfect for families, stroller walks, or anyone looking for a quiet break in nature.

You can often spot flamingos, black-winged stilts, cormorants, and other birds, especially during spring and autumn migration seasons.

It’s a surprising and beautiful wildlife escape right in the heart of the town.
